Just so you know I'm being very brave here in showing you my first quilt. Over in Camille Roskelley's blog "Simplify" and Carrie's blog "LaVieEnRosie" they are challenging everybody to show their first and last quilt you made. This quilt I made quite a few years ago before I was even married. It was made in a sampler class at a shop called "Patches of Ponsonby" . It was the best class I could have done as I learnt so many techniques that have helped in making other quilts. We had a wonderful patient teacher, "Juliet Taylor". She gave us a small lesson in hand quilting at the end. I made it for my Mother's spare bedroom and that is where it still lives so I had to get her to take a photo and send it over. (Thanks Mum) I think I even have very small amounts of some of the fabrics still in my scrap basket. It's not perfect but I don't think your first quilt should be because that's how you learn.
This quilt appears on my blog already here, and is the last quilt I made. It hangs out on an antique cane arm chair out of the sun so the colours stay nice and vibrant.

Hi Catherine ~ Beautiful quilts and wonderful stories, thank you! Your sampler quilt is beautiful and I think you're right, you have to make the mistakes to really learn, and to learn that taking the time to do it right is worth it. Your latest quilt is gorgeous, I'm in love with the hand-quilting you did on it. As beautiful as the picture is, I'm sure they don't do your quilt justice!
Your last quilt is vibrant and beautiful. And I agree, just look at the quilting! But your first quilt looks very good to me too! The colours are more muted but the pattern looks quite difficult to me! The result is lovely and I am sure your mum is very happy to have it in her spare bedroom!
Wow those are fabulous colors in your recent quilt. I have not used batiks yet. My list of "must dos someday" is getting really, really long. And the hand quilting is remarkable. Wow!
It's great your first quilt is being used by your mom !! Thanks for sharing.
Great first quilt! if our first quilts were perfect, would we make anymore? I love the vibrant colors on the recent quilt ... the quilting made be envious. I bet your mom is thrilled beyond to have your first quilt!
Your first quilt looks very complex. You pulled it off really well! How nice of you to leave it for your Mom.
Both of your quilts are lovely. Thanks for sharing them.
